Welcome to the Home Food Community Kitchen
About Us
The Home Food Community Kitchen is a University of Calgary initiative that aims to address food insecurity in our campuses and communities. We provide free meal kits and cook-a-long sessions on affordable, healthy, and culturally diverse meals.
To date, our team has brought online cook-a-longs for families at the Children’s Cottage Society Calgary Resource Centre. We have also helped cook and distribute hot, free meals with the Students for Direct Action Food Justice Now team for students. We are also providing Kiva microloans to food-insecure entrepreneurs, families, and children around the world through our members' collected recyclable funds.

What is our objective?
There are currently thousands of Albertan families and children who live in underprivileged circumstances and regularly experience food insecurity. Although it is well-established that what we eat directly affects our health, low-income individuals are still more likely to resort to cheaper, highly processed foods, often due to financial constraints and a lack of knowledge on how to cook affordable, healthier meals. This significantly increases the risk of developing cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, several forms of cancer, and a myriad of other health conditions.
To address food insecurity in our community and on campus, our team initiated our university’s first service-oriented and youth-led cooking club—the Home Food Community Kitchen. We are open to and excited for further collaborations to address food insecurity in our local community and beyond.
